Pamporovo is situated 230 Kilometres from Sofia and 85 from Plovdiv airports.
Pamporovo is an established ski resort with a small town of hotels and nightlife with skiing traditions going back to 1933. The snow with a depth of around 150 cms lasts up to 150 days in the winter season and the temperature is usually steady at around 8.5 centigrade.
Pamporovo has 20 kilometers of ski runs and is suitable for all levels of skiing and snowboarding. Beginners will find it especially welcoming. Apart from Skiing the Pamporovo area like the Rhodopes is a popular town for Walking and Camping, Caving, Rock climbing, Mountain biking and horse riding.
The Smolyan region which includes Pamporovo is a vast area of the Rhodope mountain area which includes a large number of small villages and some larger towns. The mountains rise and fall in an area not unlike the highlands of Scotland with winding roads that are cut into hard rock and dense forest. The area though predominately known as a winter sports area has its own outstanding beauty and can be enjoyed year round with many hikers, campers and lovers of the outdoors coming into the area in the summer months.

There are many mountain monasteries in the area which house old icons and mural wall paintings that date back a thousand years or more, The culture of the Rhodopes is an ancient one rich in craft and folklore and one that as we have previously said, includes that of the musician Orpheus, who according to Legend was born close nearby to Pamporovo in the mountain village of Gela.
Orpheus was the greatest musician and poet of Greek myth, whose songs could charm wild beasts and entice even rocks and trees into movement. He was one of the Argonauts and when they had to pass the island of the Sirens it was Orpheus's music which stopped the crew from being lured to their destruction. When Orpheus's wife was killed by snakebite he went down into the underworld to bring her back. His songs were so beautiful that the god Hades was moved to agree to allow her to return to the world of the living. However, Orpheus had to meet one condition: he must not look back at his wife on his way out of the netherworld. But, as he was taking her to the surface; Just before the pair reached the upper world, Orpheus looked back, and his wife slipped back into the realm of Hades once again.
